Smederevo
The Smederevo plant's design capacity is 2.2 million metric tons annually. The plant's operations have never reached this level. U. S. Steel Serbia is rebuilding and revamping various units in a $38 million investment campaign to reach the 2.2 million ton production level during the 2005-2006 period. Elements in this campaign include rebuilding the plant's No. 1 blast furnace, idle since 1987; modifications in the steel producing shop aimed at increasing steel furnace output by 20-percent; and modernization of two continuous casting machines, outfitting them with variable width molds to enhance productivity and product quality. U. S. Steel Serbia produced about 1.1 million metric tons of raw steel in 2004, a new production record for the company, exceeding 2003 production levels by 40-percent. In December 2004, the plant completed a $10.5 million upgrade of its cold reduction sheet mill installing a new automation system that eliminates a long obsolete electrical control system. Electronic problems had restricted production of the high value added products for many years. The upgrade will allow an increase of more than 140,000 tons of cold reduced sheet products annually - mostly for export. The $10.5 million project was the latest investment in a spending campaign of more than $30 million in 2004. |
